Chapter 2 - George Washington Price and Elizabeth Brown Coakley
George Washington Price was born November 23, 1843, the youngest son of Abner Price and Martha Arnold. He grew up on the “Indiantown” plantation and was only three years old when his mother died. As a young man, he was a student at Comorn in King George County when the Civil War began.
George enlisted in the Confederate Army on March 23, 1862, joining his brothers in Company K of the 30th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He served throughout the war, including provost duty in Fredericksburg from November 1863 to June 1864. He participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor in June 1864 and remained with the regiment until late 1864.
After the war, George returned to King George County. On Christmas Eve, 1868, he married Elizabeth Brown Coakley at Alden. George served as a Constable and later as the Sheriff of King George County. The couple had ten children, though their first son, Weldon, died in infancy. In 1882, George and Elizabeth purchased a 40-acre farm from her parents, Robert and Mary Ann Coakley. George died in 1917 at the age of 74.
