Political History Following the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, forfeited estates were managed by a commission that attempted to introduce industry and moderation.

Religion By the 1750s, a movement known as Moderatism emerged, seeking cooperation with the political status quo and emphasizing moral content over theological arguments. However, by the early 1800s, Moderatism was in decline, challenged by the evangelical movement led by the Haldane brothers, who advocated a literal interpretation of the Bible and aggressive evangelism. Alexander Burr was recorded as a Presbyterian and later a member of the Free Church, while his wife Isabella was Congregationalist, suggesting an evangelical orientation.
