Chapter 4 (Section II) - Political Heritage and English Influence
Early Political Heritage Scottish kingship traditionally followed “tanistry,” or succession by cousinage, which often led to conflict between rivals. The House of Canmore, established by Malcolm III in 1058, ended in 1286, leading to a succession crisis resolved by English intervention and the subsequent Wars of Independence led by Robert the Bruce. The Stuart dynasty was established in 1371.
English Influence Alexander Burr’s English language resulted from centuries of influence beginning with the Angles. Relations between Scotland and England fluctuated between war and marriage alliances, culminating in the Union of the Crowns when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603.
